The Complete Beginner's Guide to KnittingReviewsI've always gone to the craft store and gazed upon the rows and rows of gorgeous, colorful, sparkly yarns, and wished that I could do something with them other than admire them. I never thought that I could learn how to knit. All the other ways I've tried didn't work--like looking in books and trying to follow illustrations. Knitting has always been so intimidating to me. There's even a whole new language you have to learn. I am so thankful that this DVD exists. Nici McNally is SO super sweet and she knits really slowly so you can follow all of the strange twists and turns associated with knitting. She repeats things over and over again so that you can actually learn techniques. She understands how awkward it is for the first-time knitter and she is quite sympathetic to the person who might still be confused--even after she has shown you something. Also, it is filmed really well, over the shoulder so that you can see what she's doing and follow along. The colors of the background don't interfere with the color of the yarn, she uses a bulky yarn so that you can see every movement. Also, it is packed with visually stunning imagery--piles of gorgeous yarn balls in the background, and vivid,candy-colored items. It's really pretty to watch. I absolutely love this DVD. For me, knitting is still really challenging and difficult at times and I even get a little frustrated, but I consult the DVD whenever I have further questions. Despite this, in two days I knitted my first project and I can't wait to create another one! If you're a beginning knitter, keep at it. You'll "get it" and it will click. You will be so happy that you stuck with it and practiced. It is very rewarding and can even build self-esteem. I would recommend this DVD to anyone who has always been afraid of learning how to knit. Teens and children would also benefit from this instructional video as well. It would be an excellent starting point. This DVD is truly worth every dime. Thanks for reading. This is just my opinion. ;) This video taught me how to knit. Nici is so sweet, nice and informative! She makes you feel relaxed and at ease. I was knitting in about 2o min. This video is everything everyone else says it is. I tried to learn on youtube but got so confused because I didnt know where people were starting from. I almost gave up but then I got this video. I am so glad. She is a wonderful teacher. Just because someone knows how to knit doesn't mean they know how to teach you. I will always keep this video for reference and am glad I found the best! When I get time, I really want to follow the DVD more closely, but so far, so good. I have tried to teach my mother to knit countless times and have felt like just slitting both wrists and throat just to end the pain quickly. I puchased this DVD, and for the first time in 86 years she can cast on and knit. Nici's approach to teaching is fabulous, and the camera angles are PERFECT. She starts off teaching you how to use your remote. Don't say "OMG," because, to my great surprise, I actually learned a couple things. Then she moves on to how to make a slip knot. The next words out of my mother's mouth were, "Oh, good, I've always wanted to know how to make a slip knot." I confess, I did say "OMG." You will appreciate her simplistic method of teaching when you try to learn techniques you don't know. Best of all, everything is compartmentalized, so you only watch specifically what you need. By the way, I put my mother's knowledge of and ability to sew right up there next to Martha Pullen, so she is not without her talents. I would greatly appreciate Ms. McNally producing an advanced techniques knitting dvd. She is a superb teacher. I have always wanted to learn to knit, and books were way too confusing. I ordered this dvd and received it one week ago. Today I am finishing my second project of a monogrammed cloth. I can't believe how easy it was to learn from this dvd. The instructor is excellent and calm to listen to. I am thrilled I purchased this dvd, and plan to order her next level when available!!! I loved her continental style and found it so easy to put into practice. Average Rating:![]() |

"Learn to Knit" 3DVD SUPER SET - American KnitterReviewsI have always wanted to learn to knit and make my own scarves, hats, and couch throws. After spending 40 years sewing I wanted to learn a new needlecraft skill. I bought this DVD set and found the instructor was helpful; however I agree with several other reviewers that her fingernails were very distracting. Instead of concentrating on the needles and yarn and her hand movements, I found myself looking at the long tiger-striped fingernails, which actually get in the way of the knitting in some of the scenes. I don't understand why the producer or someone didn't ask the teacher to cut her nails because every knitter that I know has short nails! I would think long fingernails would impede your knitting speed and just be very annoying. I am still learning, and other than the nails I found this video set helpful. Yes, there are things about this video that are a little annoying, but, the bottom line is that the directions are clear and easy to follow so even a novice knitter can complete the projects. There are lots of good close ups, and she uses nice big needles and yarn so it is easy to see what she is doing. If you are a beginner knitter, get this DVD, it will really help you get started. I'm posting this review on ALL of the disc sites I can find for any of these discs! I didn't have any reviews to go by when I bought this, and I wish I'd waited, but then that would have been someone else's tough luck. I ordered the set of 5 videos and WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! First, each DVD contains MAYBE one hour of instruction, so these could have all been put on one video & been a much better deal. Secondly, altho the teaching is fair, this doesn't teach anything you couldn't learn yourself from a product called "I Taught Myself How to Knit!", which comes with needles & the basic necessities you need to start knitting. The Fair Isle DVD doesn't actually teach you two-handed Fair Isle color knitting, which is what I really wanted to learn. It teaches you how to knit right-handed with two colors, laying one down & picking the other up - THIS IS NOT 2-HANDED KNITTING! All in all, I'm very disappointed in the set of DVDs; I wouldn't recommend them to anyone, unless you find a used set of all 5 DVDs (probably mine!), here or at a garage sale; and I wouldn't recommend you spend more than $5 for all of them. I love this DVD. I've never knitted before, and the instructor in this DVD is great. She teaches slowly step by step, and there are clear places in the DVD to pause, continue your work at your own speed, and then pick right back up at the next step by pressing play. The camera work is perfect, and the instructors hands stay in the frame the whole time. I also bought the "I Can't Believe I'm Crocheting" DVD to learn that as well, and this knitting DVD blows that one out of the water. There is no comparison; this one is great for beginners!!! I can't believe how unprofessional this product is. To start, she's sitting in a chair. She looks like a mess! The camera angle is over her right shoulder. EVERY stitch she does is blocked by her right hand. THANK goodness I already know how to knit. I wanted to learn a little more but I didn't. If your a BEGINNER DO NOT buy this. She goes so so fast you won't be able to keep up. Plus, like I said already, her hand blocks every stitch she makes. How can you see how to put the yarn around the needle when she blocks the view of the camera with her big hand. She should be over a white table and light yarn. She uses Dark Green yarn to start off. How can a beginner see anything when she knits in that manner. It's a joke. The camera should be over her hands so what you see on TV is what the KNITTER is looking at. She doesn't have patterns for the 3 items she makes. In the items she knits she does increases and decreases WITHOUT TELLING YOU the name of it. What good does it do if a beginner doesn't have the name of the increase/decrease. You can't apply it to a your own items/patterns. There are half a dozen EACH. She doesn't tell you the other increases/decreases. She does things without even explaining them. For example CABLES. Sometimes the camera is completely off of her hand. I was SO looking forward to this but IT'S GETTING RETURNED!! Average Rating:![]() |

The Chicks with Sticks Guide to Knitting: Learn to Knit with More Than 30 Cool, Easy PatternsReviewsThis book was my first knitting book, and I either have made or intend to make almost every project in it! The projects are modern, and the instructions are very clear and easy to follow. This was a great book to learn how to knit. You learn one skill (knit stitch first) and practice it with a project immediately following. I learned to knit from this book. It also has some nice, contemporary designs for clothing, which is what really sold me on the book. I wish it had more information about fibers and how they look, feel, etc. once knitted up. I have been knitting for about a year and a half and considered myself to be solely a hat and scarf knitter until now. I got this book out of the library and had to break down and buy it since I immediately bought enough yarn to do half the projects in the book, and fell in love with the style. I found the instruction to be easy to follow, and the projects are beautiful and up-to-date as well as being easy to create and things you actually WANT to wear. LOVE it! As a new, self-taught knitter, I've enjoyed this book and refer to it often. Skill level is Beginner to Advanced Beginner, and the yarns are mostly bulky or worsted weight (so the projects knit up more quickly). The projects are very basic, introducing and using new skills as you go along. I like the patterns - you can see samples of most of them (done by real people) on Ravelry. I know of a ballet class for adults that is called "VERY Beginning Ballet" because it simply is just that: a class for someone who has had absolutely no practice (even minimal) in the art of ballet. The same principle can be applied to this book. I tend to pick up hobbies spontaneously and last week I decided to learn how to knit (just to give others a reference, I'm also a VERY quick learner). The first half of this book is information that could be found online simply by searching for the keywords "learn to knit." And many of the beginning projects aren't worthwhile because they are TOO simple and repetitive and in my opinion, are just a waste of yarn. I suggest buying an inexpensive ball (the cheapest you can find) and practicing all the stitches consecutively (you can even bind it off for a mismatched scarf). While I like how the authors gave an introduction to working in interstasia and fair isle, I believe further books (or online how-to's) are necessary to grasp those concepts. In short: very easy read, projects are either boring or too difficult for the beginning knitter. If you do end up buying this book, I say: read first half, practice stitches (don't do any of the projects except maybe the beanie project to get a feel for working with circular and double pointed needles), then find free patterns online of projects you would actually like to do, finish the rest of the book and find projects and tutorials to help you with knitting in color. In the end, I returned my book. Average Rating:![]() |

Learn to Knit on Circle Looms 1405ReviewsThis book seems pretty good- haven't tried any of the ideas out, yet. It's not a large book, but good for the price. Has some different ideas that the basics, so it gives more than the norm; however, it still doesn't take you very far into trying newer and harder designs...makes you wonder about the looms, not sure if they are that much easier than knitting and have as many pattern options. I tried knitting and crocheting with needles and could not get the hang of it. I bought the knifty knitter circle looms and this book and am now half way done making a baby blanket! The instructions in this book are clear and easy to follow. This is a great book for someone who is just starting because it is easy to figure out. I highly recommend it! Knifty Knitter Round Loom Set With Hook & Bag I bought this to try and they are so fun and fast, I knit and crochet and the loom is another way of having fun. I have already done the scarf on the front cover. This is a great book with easy to read instructions. Average Rating:![]() |

Learn to Knit Cables on LoomsReviewsI've been Knifty Knitting for about 5 years and I've made hats, purses, shrugs, stuffed animals, etc. So, I'm no novice. But the cable stitch takes some practice. I still haven't figured out the wider cables because the stitches are so tight I can't get them off the pegs and when I make them loose, then the stitch is all loosy goosy. The instructions are good but needs a LOT more pictures to go along. I've made the scarf so far and that is a narrow cable so I think I did it right? But the next project I started was the purse and that has a wide cable. My stitch was so tight that I broke the yarn! I never saw a chain cast on before and now I love that method. The first row of whatever I made using the e-wrap was always really loose. Not so w/ the chain cast on. Cool! However, I cant' quite figure out the benefit of the knit stitch method over the e-wrap method? The e-wrap stitch forms a nicer V than the knit stitch method shown in the book. It was great to learn how to purl though. All in all, good book just needs more pictures for us visual learners. Keep cabling!!! The book had good, easy to follow instructions, alot of pictures so you could see if something was wrong right away. I would definatly buy this book (if I hadn't already done so :). Great book with easy to follow directions. Helps make the looms even more versitile. Good reference tool. A must have if you are ready to work cables on your loom. A simple and concise book; and a must have to the looming library! This book is a good source of patterns to use the Knifty Knitter loom. It has really good instructions, too. Average Rating:![]() |
